Why You Need a Roadworthy Certificate

A roadworthy certificate is not just a piece of paper; it's a guarantee that your vehicle meets the safety standards set by the Queensland government. It covers the inspection of essential components such as brakes, suspension, tires, lights, and more. Whether you're transferring ownership or registering your car, a roadworthy certificate is mandatory. Having this certificate ensures that your vehicle is safe for you and others on the road.

When do you need a Roadworthy or Safety Certificate?

In Queensland, a safety certificate is required when transferring registration to a new owner, transferring to Queensland registration from another state or territory, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. Vehicles that need a safety certificate include cars, motorcycles, trailers (including caravans) with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) between 750kg and 4,500kg, and any other vehicles up to 4,500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM). Ensuring your vehicle has a valid safety certificate is crucial for compliance with Queensland regulations and for the safety of all road users.

What’s Involved in a Roadworthy Inspection?

Booking a roadworthy inspection ensures your vehicle meets Queensland's safety standards. During the inspection, certified mechanics will check critical components such as brakes, suspension, tires, lights, and the overall structural integrity of your vehicle. If your car fails the initial inspection, you have 14 days to address any issues before a follow-up inspection. Once your vehicle passes, you'll receive a roadworthy or safety certificate, which is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. This process ensures that your car is safe for use on the road and compliant with local regulations.

Comprehensive Roadworthy Inspections

When you book a roadworthy inspection, you can expect a thorough examination of your vehicle's essential components. The process includes:

‍Tyres: Checking for tread depth, damage, and proper inflation.
‍Brakes: Inspecting the condition of the brake system to ensure it functions correctly and safely.
‍Steering: Examining the steering system for any signs of wear or damage.
‍Suspension: Assessing the suspension for any issues that could affect vehicle handling and stability.
‍Body Rust or Damage: Inspecting for any rust or damage that could compromise the vehicle's structural integrity.
‍Windscreen: Checking the windscreen for cracks or damage that could impair visibility.
‍Lights: Verifying that all lights, indicators, and signals are working properly.

Follow-Up Inspections and Certification

If your vehicle does not pass the initial inspection, you have 14 days to fix any identified issues. After repairs, a second inspection will be conducted to ensure all problems have been resolved. Once your vehicle meets the required safety standards, you will be issued a roadworthy or safety certificate. This certificate is essential for registering your vehicle and is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres, providing peace of mind that your car is roadworthy.
