A roadworthy certificate is not just a piece of paper; it's a guarantee that your vehicle meets the safety standards set by the Queensland government. It covers the inspection of essential components such as brakes, suspension, tires, lights, and more. Whether you're transferring ownership or registering your car, a roadworthy certificate is mandatory. Having this certificate ensures that your vehicle is safe for you and others on the road.
In Queensland, a safety certificate is required when transferring registration to a new owner, transferring to Queensland registration from another state or territory, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. Vehicles that need a safety certificate include cars, motorcycles, trailers (including caravans) with an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) between 750kg and 4,500kg, and any other vehicles up to 4,500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM). Ensuring your vehicle has a valid safety certificate is crucial for compliance with Queensland regulations and for the safety of all road users.
Booking a roadworthy inspection ensures your vehicle meets Queensland's safety standards. During the inspection, certified mechanics will check critical components such as brakes, suspension, tires, lights, and the overall structural integrity of your vehicle. If your car fails the initial inspection, you have 14 days to address any issues before a follow-up inspection. Once your vehicle passes, you'll receive a roadworthy or safety certificate, which is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. This process ensures that your car is safe for use on the road and compliant with local regulations.
When you book a roadworthy inspection, you can expect a thorough examination of your vehicle's essential components. The process includes:
Tyres: Checking for tread depth, damage, and proper inflation.
Brakes: Inspecting the condition of the brake system to ensure it functions correctly and safely.
Steering: Examining the steering system for any signs of wear or damage.
Suspension: Assessing the suspension for any issues that could affect vehicle handling and stability.
Body Rust or Damage: Inspecting for any rust or damage that could compromise the vehicle's structural integrity.
Windscreen: Checking the windscreen for cracks or damage that could impair visibility.
Lights: Verifying that all lights, indicators, and signals are working properly.
If your vehicle does not pass the initial inspection, you have 14 days to fix any identified issues. After repairs, a second inspection will be conducted to ensure all problems have been resolved. Once your vehicle meets the required safety standards, you will be issued a roadworthy or safety certificate. This certificate is essential for registering your vehicle and is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres, providing peace of mind that your car is roadworthy.
A roadworthy inspection is a crucial step in ensuring your vehicle is safe and compliant with Queensland's regulations. By addressing any potential issues identified during the inspection, you can prevent future problems and maintain the safety and reliability of your vehicle. Regular inspections and timely repairs not only help in securing a roadworthy certificate but also contribute to the long-term health of your car, ensuring it remains in top condition for years to come.

A car is considered not roadworthy if it fails to meet the safety standards required for driving on public roads. This can include issues such as worn brakes, damaged tires, malfunctioning lights, compromised suspension, faulty steering, or structural damage. A non-roadworthy car poses a significant risk to the driver, passengers, and other road users because it may not perform safely under normal driving conditions. Ensuring your car is roadworthy is crucial for safety and legal compliance.
Yes, in Queensland, a safety certificate is often referred to as a roadworthy certificate. Both terms are used interchangeably to describe the certification that confirms a vehicle meets the required safety standards for registration or transfer of ownership. The safety certificate ensures that the vehicle has been inspected and is safe to drive, covering essential components such as brakes, tires, lights, steering, and suspension.
In Queensland, you can renew your vehicle registration up to three months after it expires. However, it is illegal to drive an unregistered vehicle, and doing so can result in fines and other penalties. It's important to renew your registration promptly to avoid any legal issues and ensure your vehicle remains roadworthy. If your registration has lapsed, you might also need a roadworthy certificate to complete the renewal process, especially if the registration has been expired for an extended period.
To check a roadworthy certificate online in Queensland, visit the Queensland Government’s official website. You can enter the vehicle details and the certificate number to verify its status. This online verification process ensures that the certificate is valid and that the vehicle has met the necessary safety standards. This service is particularly useful when purchasing a used vehicle, as it allows you to confirm that the car has passed its roadworthy inspection.
If your vehicle fails the roadworthy inspection, you will receive a report detailing the issues that need to be fixed. You have 14 days to address these issues and return for a re-inspection. The follow-up inspection will ensure that all identified problems have been resolved. Once the vehicle passes the re-inspection, you will be issued a roadworthy certificate. It is crucial to rectify the issues promptly to avoid further delays in obtaining the certificate and ensuring your vehicle is safe for road use.

In Queensland, a roadworthy certificate is valid for two months or 2,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. This validity period allows sufficient time to complete the necessary vehicle registration or ownership transfer processes. If the vehicle is not registered or the ownership is not transferred within this period, a new inspection and certificate may be required to ensure the vehicle still meets safety standards.

During the inspection, the vehicle will undergo a thorough check of key components such as brakes, tires, suspension, steering, and lights. If the vehicle passes the inspection, you will be issued a roadworthy certificate. If any issues are identified, you will need to repair them and have the vehicle re-inspected. Booking an appointment with a certified inspector ensures your vehicle meets all safety requirements.
A roadworthy certificate, also known as a safety certificate in Queensland, is a document that certifies a vehicle has passed a safety inspection and meets the necessary standards for registration and road use. The inspection covers essential safety components, including brakes, tires, suspension, steering, and lights. Obtaining a roadworthy certificate is mandatory for registering a vehicle, transferring ownership, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle, ensuring the vehicle is safe to operate on public roads.
When you transfer registration of a vehicle, you must give a current safety certificate to the new owner. It is not the new owner's obligation to obtain a safety certificate, and you may be fined over $700 for failing to obtain and provide a current safety certificate. This ensures that the vehicle meets safety standards and protects both the seller and buyer in the transaction. Not providing a safety certificate can lead to legal issues and financial penalties.
